Review
While there are short-term jobs of working as a wedding guest in Korea, the rental culture in Japan is even more specified into categories such as friend, family, and lover. This movie begins with a husband-to-be visiting the home of his future wife, who grew up without a father. Without the daughter’s knowledge, her mother and the fiancé hire a rental dad, Nakamura, as a surprise, to create a full family. Nakamura’s second client is an art student Rika, who hires him as a model for her school project to draw her own father’s face. As usual, the two begin with awkwardness, but soon grow into individuals who can share their feelings with each other. In this process, Nakamura learns of Rika’s tragic family story and shares his own story of his loss of his daughter, and the various experiences he accumulated through working as a rental dad. This film shows a slice of modern society where family systems become more and more segmented, and people find it harder to create relationships with others. (CHUN Jinsu)
