Overview

A poetic essay film through the lens of an undocumented immigrant becoming disillusioned by their future in the United States and deciding to return to an estranged homeland. Nowhere Near tracks down the origin of a family curse backtracking through the post 9/11 era, the US occupation of the Philippines, and the Spanish empire's spiritual conquest.

Review

Miko Revereza made a name for himself as a director of experimental films with his previous works. His latest is a document that seeks to understand his family members living as illegal immigrants in the US. Through an investigation lasting several years, he learned about the reasons behind the situation faced by his family, and his creative process guides the viewer to hear the stories of their lives. As the director embarks on a journey with his grandmother to the family’s home city of Manila, we are shown what is real and what is imagined. The film adopts the first-person format of a diary, yet it also breaks away from the conventional approach to narrative. An organic relationship between form and content takes shape as the various cinematic elements used by the director are transformed into something like the workings of memory. (Sung MOON)
