In Tale of Shepherds, the kind of typical rural landscape often found in Spanish cinema is used as a backdrop to create a fictional story in which old oral history meets contemporary technology. Alternating among elements that include ancient legends, missing persons, sheep, virtual worlds, and drones, it creates a world midway between reality and imagination—one world that seems poised to disappear and another that is set to arrive. It is at this special intersection that the film’s magic and beauty arise. For his feature-length debut, director Jaime Puertas Castillo has created a film that marries past with present both in historical and cinematic senses. (Sung MOON)
