Review

Sultana’s Dream is an animation that expresses the main character’s story through fantastical artistry and digs into the roots of Indian Feminism. While Spanish artist Inés stays in India, she happens upon a fantasy novel written in 1905 by Rokeya Hossain called Sultana’s Dream. This novel describes a utopia ruled by called “Ladyland”, where men stay at home and do the housework. Charmed by the novel, Inés decides to create an animation inspired by this novel and heads to India. Will Inés be able to find herself on this trip? Director Isabel Herguera expresses each chapter of the film with a unique visual style. For example, Inés’s journey is painted with ink and watercolors, while Hossain’s story includes shadow-like figures, and Ladyland feels like a fairytale due to the traditional patterns used to tell the story.
