Overview
In crisis-ridden Buenos Aires, in November 2001, bandoneon player Julio Färber battles financial woes as the peso plummets. Leading the "Vecinos de Pompeya" tango band, he faces diminishing gig earnings and struggles with the family shoe shop. Contemplating leaving Buenos Aires, the government freezes bank accounts, and a chance encounter with spirited cab driver Mariela alters his fate.

Review
November, 2001. Buenos Aires. Argentina is going through an economic crisis in which the value of the peso is falling. Julio, a charismatic bandoneon player in a workers' tango band called Vecinos de Pompeya (Neighbors of Pompeii), tries hard to make a living but his income from performance fees and the shoe store he inherited from his father is decreasing every month. In the end, Julio decides to immigrate to Germany and is about to sell off both the store and the car, but a fiery taxi driver Mariela destroys the car, Julio's last asset, in a collision. To make matters worse, the government freezes his bank account. On top of that, Julio’s acquaintance with Mariela and apologetic feelings for his tango band members stop him from leaving Argentina. The film shows that it is the common people who suffer in an economic crisis that is close to bankrupting the country and how they overcome the suffering with their solidarity with each other and positive energy—making the film moving and entertaining along with the charming tango melody that runs throughout the film. German KRAL
Born in Buenos Aires in 1968. Kral first worked with Wim Wenders between 1993 and 1996 on the film A Trick of the Light (1995). His diploma film Images of the Absence (1998) was nominated for the German Grimme Prize 2001 and awarded the First Prize at the Yamagata Film Festival in Japan 1999 and the Young Bavarian Documentary Film Award 2000.
