Wicked Little Letters
Based on a stranger-than-fiction true story, this film follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith(Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose(Jessie Buckley). When Edith and her fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime.

In an era without Twitter or YouTube, the only way to express anger toward an unjust world was to write a letter by hand. This is how the early 20th century societal phenomenon of “crude letters” began. In a British seaside town in the 1920s, scatterbrained Irish immigrant Rose Gooding lives next door to conservative Edith Swan, who has deep roots in the area. When Edith and other residents begin receiving letters filled with vulgar swear words and curses, the blame goes to foul-mouthed Rose. Eventually, the anonymous letters stir up too much trouble, and Rose is put on the stand as a suspect. But as police officer Gladys and other ladies of the town investigate the case, they realize something is wrong and that Rose may not be the culprit. As a black comedy, this film combines the conservative patriarchal system of the town with prejudice toward outsiders and sexist attitudes. Olivia Colman shines as Edith as does many of the other actors in this film. (CHUN Jinsu)
