Review

Picasso once said, “It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child. Every child is an artist.” This appears to be a transformation that occurs even among directors who have mastered the language of cinema. Barbet Schroeder is renowned not only for his extensive career, spanning from art-house films to Hollywood blockbusters, TV series, and his legendary documentary series The Trilogy of Evil, but also for his exceptional directorial talent. In this film, he sets aside large-scale filmmaking to portray the simple and honest daily life of a rural village painter. Ricardo endeavors to capture the wonder of nature on canvas and teaches local children how to express themselves through art. Just as a seasoned artist breaks free from rules and constraints to unveil the essence of life, Barbet Schroeder captures, through Ricardo, the humble yet profound moments where art embraces humanity and enriches existence.
