Review

A new animation about Cuban Latin jazz by Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal, the creators of Chico and Rita (2010). The film begins when a music journalist in New York accidentally learns of the existence of a genius Brazilian pianist named Tenório Jr. and comes across a record that he suddenly disappeared while touring Argentina in 1976. Like the journalist in the film, Trueba is said to have been conducting interviews with Tenório's colleagues and acquaintances since hearing about Tenório Jr., with the plan to make a documentary someday. With some added fiction to such materials, he was able to cinematize the brightest moments of bossa nova through animation. At the same time, the film shows how violently the military dictatorships in several South American countries oppressed artists and ordinary people, making us reflect on the agony of the times.
