Review

Was the Sewol ferry tragedy in 2014 just an accidental mistake that happened out of nowhere? Life Goes On by Jang Minkyung suggests that such a social disaster had already been predicted by our poor social system. The film looks back at the Daegu Subway Fire Disaster in 2003, the Sealand Youth Training Center Fire Tragedy in 1999, through to the death of Lee Han-yeol in 1987, to expose the true face of Korean society where the same accidents occur over and over, no matter how much time passes and how many governments change. Although various measures have been loudly announced in the wake of such social disasters, the fact that a similar tragedy occurred in Itaewon in 2022 makes it clear that the social safety system is not working properly. This film is centered around the appearance of bereaved families of various victims of social disasters in a podcast named The Love at the End of the World, hosted by Ye Eun’s dad, Yoo Gyoung Geun, a bereaved family member from the Sewol ferry tragedy. They accept the disasters that occurred in different times and spaces as their own and empathize with the pain, which resonates deeply. The deep empathy and warm story of Bae Eun-sim, mother of Lee Han-yeol, who passed away in 2022, is also impressive. The film has been screened at numerous film festivals including the 13th DMZ International Documentary Film Festival. (MOON Seok)
