Review

Still Waiting at Paengmok is a short documentary follows a few days of travelling by Soonbeom’s mom, Sooin’s mom, and Sooyeon’s dad, all bereaved family members of the Sewol ferry tragedy, to Paengmok Port at the end of November 2023. They travel a long way after leaving home in the morning, and visit the Paengmok Memorial Center, to say hello to their children who remain only in pictures, and share stories about their daily lives. They lay flowers that someone brought, clear off the dust, read messages in the guest book and repair old exhibits. They chat with the elderly locals and pray for their children. This warm and pleasant outing for the three bereaved families soon turns dark in front of the wreckage of the Sewol ferry, which seems to be on the point of collapse. The final shot of them leaving the memorial center for home will surely be followed by someone else visiting the center. (MOON Seok)
