Newtro Jeonju, created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Jeonju IFF, is a special program that sheds light on the contemporary artists who have shared their vision with us for the last 20 years. We selected the artists with three criteria. First, the artists who have agreed with the history, vision, and identity of the Jeonju IFF and embodied them in their films. Second, the artists who released more than one new work since 2018. Third, the artists who are able to visit the Jeonju IFF in 2019 to communicate their past and future prospects with the audience. Based on the above criteria, we invite 20 artists and screen their new films. The artists who have participated in the Jeonju Digital Project and Jeonju Cinema Project, the leading programs of the Jeonju IFF for 20 years, participate in the program, including James Benning, Denis Cote, Gyorgy Palfi, Benjamin Naishtat, Park Jungbum, Kim Hee Jung, and Jang Woo-jin, and the filmmakers including Alex Ross Perry, KHAVN, Gaston Solnicki, Dominga Sotomayor Castillo, Peter Bo Rappmund, Guillaume Brac, Hong Hyung- sook, Ko Bong-soo, and Jung Hyungsuk, they will present their works for the new section. For the directors who recently released short films (Ben Rivers, Eduardo Williams, Helena Wittmann), their new and past short films will be screened together in order to consider their evolution at one time.
Newtro Jeonju is to reclaim the true name of Jeonju IFF, which marks its 20th anniversary. We hope that this program will be a chance to look at the future of artists, Jeonju IFF, and cinema, rather than being a retrospective to remember the Festival’s glorious past. “Newtro,” which is a combination of “new” and “retro,” is a name reflecting our hopes. Thanks to the efforts of people who have tried not to follow the cliches of curation, the list of the Festival is filled with unique films and it also looks a little strange. The Jeonju IFF, which has revealed the various forms and alternative voices or hidden aspects of contemporary cinema, not only promotes long-term partnership with the 20 artists, but also continue to cooperate with the reliable artists who have made connections with the Festival.
