LEE Chang-dong

Born in Daegu, South Korea in 1945, director LEE Chang-dong made his debut as a novelist before as a director. After his debut feature Green?Fish?(1997), his works ? Peppermint Candy (1999), Oasis?(2002), Secret?Sunshine?(2007), Poetry?(2010), Burning?(2018) were acclaimed at Korean and other international awards.?

Following her husband’s death, Shin-ae and her son move to the late husband’shometown. Helping her out is Jong-chan, a good-intentioned but bothersome car mechanic. Oasis(2002)

Jong- du, who has three previous convictions, pays a visit to the family of the victim in the hit-and-run accident for which he served time and meets Gong-ju, the victim’s daughter, who has cerebral palsy. Jong-du is fascinated by her at first sight and visits her again when he knows she is alone. Over a series of clandestinemeetings, the handicapped young woman and the feckless young man come to fall in love with each other. However, their love is not the one that is understood by anyone else.

Spring in 1999. A group of middle-aged working- class friends meets for the 20th year reunion of their old factory worker’s association. While they sing and dance up a storm, their long-lost friend Yongho shows up, disrupting the party. He climbs on top of a railroad track and refuses to budge despite the danger of an approaching train. When he shouts, “I am going back,” time runs forward as the train goes back.

Mak-dong comes across Mi- ae, the girlfriend of gang boss Tae-gon, and gets a job as a parking attendant through her. Soon Mak-dong is admitted as a full-fledged member of the gang. When Tae-gon’s former boss Yang-gil arrives on the scene, however, Mak- dong has to make a final commitment by getting rid of him.

Lee Chang-dong: the art of irony?(2022)

A portrait of the Korean representative cineast through his work - films and writings. “Dramatic irony” is a time travel to approach director Lee focusing on his nature and truth. Inspired by Peppermint Candy, the film travels back in time to his artistic origin, from the present, then on time as a writer, up to his childhood. It also tells the stories of the actors in his films and co-writer Oh Jung- mi about their collaborations. In addition, the film shows the presence of each location and the beginning of the great artist.
